Overview
The Bachelor of Science Honours – Chemistry specialisation is offered on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses. The Chemistry Honours programme builds on the undergraduate major by providing advanced theoretical training, specialised laboratory practice and independent research experience. It enables students to engage with contemporary challenges in chemistry, with opportunities to focus on areas such as environmental monitoring and analysis, nanotechnology, drug design and materials development. The programme prepares graduates for postgraduate research and professional careers that demand depth of knowledge, innovation and scientific leadership.
Entry Requirements
- Applicants are eligible to apply to register for the Chemistry specialisation in the BSc (Hons) programme if they have previously been awarded a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Chemistry.

What do they actually do?
A Chemist is a scientist who studies the area of science known as chemistry, which focuses on chemical substances and how they interact with each other. A chemical substance is a form of matter. Matter is anything that takes up space.
All Chemists work with simple forms of matter to reach either a greater understanding of the chemical itself, uncover the elements of unfamiliar substances or create entirely new chemical compounds for use in a variety of ways to enhance life.
