Chemistry

Chemistry is the central science that links physics, biology and the material world, revealing how molecules shape everything from human health to renewable energy and advanced technology. It offers a deep understanding of matter and its transformations, opening pathways to innovations that improve lives and drive sustainable development. Studying chemistry means engaging with ideas and techniques that power modern science, industry and society.

Why Study Chemistry at UKZN?

Offered on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses, Chemistry at UKZN provides a dynamic, future-focused education underpinned by a comprehensive curriculum that spans analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Our programme combines a rigorous foundation in chemical principles with hands-on experience in modern laboratories, enabling our students to develop advanced practical skills and the ability to think critically, creatively, and ethically.

With access to cutting-edge instrumentation, research-active staff, and industry partnerships, our students engage with real scientific and societal challenges, developing the versatility needed to thrive in diverse professional and academic pathways. Our graduates are well-prepared for leadership roles in research, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and for further study. Rooted in a legacy of excellence and committed to impactful, Africa-centred innovation, UKZN’s Chemistry programme is a powerful launchpad for a rewarding scientific career.

CASSE – Alternative Access Programme

The Centre for the Advancement of Science and Engineering (CASSE) provides alternative access to students, predominantly from disadvantaged educational backgrounds, who do not meet the standard entry requirements for science and engineering qualifications.

How the Programme Works

  • Students complete their degree over one additional year.
  • Augmented modules are taken during the first two years.
  • Thereafter, students join mainstream students and continue with standard modules within the School.

This structured approach provides academic support while ensuring students graduate with the same qualification as their mainstream peers.

Entry Requirements

  • NSC degree pass with Maths, English, Life Orientation and Physical Science Level 4 (50%)
  • Application Perfomace Score (APS) range: 26-48
