Biography

Prof Bala is an accomplished NRF C2-rated researcher with a speciality in sustainability and catalysis. He holds an MSc and a PhD in Chemistry. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2016 and has featured multiple times in the “Top 30 Researchers” at UKZN awards.

Over the past 20 years, Prof Bala has lectured in Inorganic Chemistry at every level of the university and has graduated close to 30 MSc and PhD students at UKZN.

Research Interests

  • Organometallic chemistry,
  • Coordination chemistry,
  • Homogeneous catalysis, and green chemistry.
  • His work particularly focuses on the design and synthesis of novel transition metal complexes for sustainable catalysis, including oxidation and transfer hydrogenation reactions.
