Professor Friedrich obtained his PhD at the University of Cape Town in organometallic chemistry. He then took up an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, before joining the University of Natal, Durban in 1994. He is a past president of the Catalysis Society of South Africa (CATSA) and currently heads the Catalysis Research Group, which carries out both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis research.
