BSc – Rhodes University
Matshawandile Tukulula obtained his BSc, BScHons and MSc (cum laude) degrees from Rhodes University and his PhD from the University of Cape Town (UCT). He undertook a postdoctoral work at Rhodes University and at the Council for industrial Research (CSIR). Thereafter, he was appointed by the CSIR as Senior Researcher in nanomedicine, specifiacllu on TB drug delivery project and various industrial projects. In 2016, he joined the CIPC-DTI as Patent Searcher/Examiner and in 2017 was appointed as a senior lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). In 2019, he joined UKZN also as senior lecturer.
Since 2019, He has been working on medicinal chemistry project geared towards discovering new chemical entities (NCEs) against infectious diseases (Malaria, HIV, and TB) and cancer research. To date, he has successfully supervised and co-supervised over 20 Honours, Masters and PhD students to completion, and there are currently seven (7) postgraduate students (4 x PhDs 3 x MSc) supervising and co-supervising. He has extensively published in ac redited, peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conference. My future plans include extensive use of computer-aided drugs design and artificial intelligence guided machine learning in ouir drug discovery projects
Dr Matshawandile’s research broadly encompass the design and synthesis of new chemical entities (NCEs) for infectious diseases, specifically Malaria, TB and neglected tropical diseases. In addition, Dr Matshawandile’s is also geared towards drug delivery research projects (nanomedicine), using polymer and lipid nanoparticles, for malaria and TB.
