Biography

Dr Govender is currently a Lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, having graduated with her PhD in Chemistry. Her present research focus area is on organic synthetic and medicinal chemistry. This entails the synthesis and characterization of heterocyclic compounds, quinoline in particular and their derivatives as a way of increasing drug discovery. Her research involves the hybridization of two compounds to produce a single compound that displays antibacterial anticancer activity and antibacterial activity. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals.

She is also interested in the fields of analytical chemistry, in particular, the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of essential oils and the testing of the essential oil for antibacterial and anticancer activity. Dr Govender has over 20 years of lecturing experience in the field.

Research Interests

  • Organic Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry

Research focus is on medicinal chemistry (organic synthesis). This entails the synthesis of heterocylic compounds, quinoline in particular and their derivatives as a way of increasing drug discovery portfolios. She is also interested in the fields of analytical chemistry, in particular, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
