Marine benthic ecology has been the major focus of his research and he has been particularly interested in the phylogeography and population genetics of marine organisms. He has previously studied benthic environments from the Pondoland coast to northern Mozambique. Working at ORI as a student he became interested in South Africa’s coral communities and the great diversity of life they harbour. Currently he applies molecular methods to investigate the diversity and resilience of SA’s coastal marine natural resources
