Professor Sudan Hansraj is a Professor of Applied Mathematics with specialisation in General Relativity and Modified Field Theories. In addition to his research interests, he has a deep passion for mathematics education.
He is a four-term member of the UMALUSI Council Standardisation Panel and a founding Board Member of the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF). Over the past 35 years, he has contributed extensively to national and international Mathematics Olympiads, serving on various panels up to the jury level of the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).
Professor Hansraj currently serves as President of the South African Gravity Society and has been repeatedly listed among the Top 2% of Scientists in the World as compiled by Stanford University.
Within the University, he has held several leadership roles, including serving as Chair of the Institutional Forum, where he played a key role in advancing policy changes such as raising the institutional retirement age.
He has supervised numerous Master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral candidates and continues to mentor emerging researchers in applied mathematics and relativity.
