Prof Sunil Maharaj holds the South African Research Chair in Gravitating Systems funded by the National Research Foundation and the Department of Science and Technology. He has been Director of the highly productive Astrophysics and Cosmology Research Unit at UKZN since 2005, which was established at the University of KwaZulu-Natal as a research centre for general relativity, cosmology and astrophysics. He presently serves as Treasurer of the Academy of Science of South Africa, and was also appointed to the Board of the National Research Foundation.
Research interests in general relativity, modified gravity theories, relativistic stars and black holes, spacetime symmetries and nonlinear differential equations.
