Prof. Scharler specialises in marine and estuarine biodiversity, ecology, food webs, network analysis, and ecological theory applications to socio-economic systems. Her current research connects fieldwork to modelling, and examines variability and resilience in populations, communities, and ecosystems. Her research relates to topics such as biodiversity, climate change effects on estuarine species, pollution, habitat loss, tropicalisation, and carbon budgets of estuarine and marine ecosystems.
