Bachelor of Science Honours – Mathematics
Overview
The Bachelor of Science Honours – Mathematics is offered on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses. The Mathematics (Hons) specialisation deepens and extends students’ mathematical knowledge and skills, preparing them for advanced study or careers requiring strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. It emphasizes the development of intellectual, practical, and analytical skills, including the ability to read, analyse, formulate, interpret, understand, communicate, and apply mathematical concepts independently.
Entry Requirements
- Applicants are eligible to apply to register for the Mathematics specialisation in the BSc (Hons) programme if they have previously been awarded a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Mathematics.
Modules
The curriculum for the Mathematics (Hons) specialisation comprises modules with a total credit point value of 128 credit points as approved by the Senate. The Module MATH799 may not be repeated.
Please note: Not all modules listed are necessarily offered every year. Module availability is subject to staff availability and student demand. Students are advised to consult with the discipline regarding modules offered in a particular year.
Semester 1
Pietermaritzburg Campus
- Set Theory & Logic – MATH710 (16 Credits)
- Topology – MATH721 (16 Credits)
- Further Group Theory – MATH751 (16 Credits)
48 credits may be selected from the modules listed below or other modules from Statistics, Applied Mathematics or Computer Science, approved by the school.
- Computability Theory – MATH730 (16 Credits)
- Further Graph Theory – MATH740 (16 Credits)
The above modules may be offered either in Semester 1 or Semester 2 at the discretion of the discipline.
Westville Campus
- Classical Algebra – MATH701 (16 Credits)
- Functional Analysis I – MATH785 (16 Credits)
64 credits from Level 7 MATH Modules (No more than 32 of these credits may be replaced by Level-7 credits outside the school, approved by the school).
The above modules may be offered either in Semester 1 or Semester 2 at the discretion of the discipline.
Semester 2

- Honours Project in Mathematics – MATH799 (32 Credits)

- Honours Project in Mathematics – MATH799 (32 Credits)
64 credits from Level 7 MATH Modules (No more than 32 of these credits may be replaced by Level-7 credits outside the school, approved by the school).
