PhD Chemistry graduate Dr Mary Akano chose to do her doctoral studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) because of its strong research focus and reputation for scientific innovation, particularly in chemistry and environmental studies.
Said Akano: “The opportunity to work in a diverse academic environment that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and addresses real-world challenges really motivated me.”
Akano’s dissertation: ‘Synthesis, Characterisation and Application of Boron Nitride-Based Semiconductors for the Photocatalytic Degradation of [per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances] PFAS in the Aquatic Environment’, focused on the critical global issue of water pollution. She was supervised by Professor Olatunde Stephen Olatunji.
“My research centred on developing advanced materials that can remove harmful chemical pollutants from water,” she explained. “These pollutants, often present in very small amounts, can still pose serious risks to human health and the environment.”
Akano said that her study aimed to provide tangible solutions: “By designing more efficient and sustainable treatment methods, my work aims to help ensure safer, cleaner water resources.”
Akano’s interest in this field stemmed from the growing global concern over water pollution and its impact on both human health and ecosystems. “Coming from a background where access to clean water is a critical issue, I was inspired to contribute to solutions that address environmental contamination using scientific approaches,” she said.
The significance of her work lies in its potential to improve water treatment technologies by making them more efficient, sustainable and cost-effective. “This is especially important for developing regions, where access to advanced systems remains limited,” she said. “Ultimately, my work contributes to global efforts towards environmental protection and public health.”
Akano intends to continue in academia and research, focusing on environmental and materials chemistry. Her long-term goals include contributing to innovative pollution control solutions and mentoring aspiring scientists, and she remains open to collaborative opportunities that bridge research and practical applications.
Akano said that she was deeply grateful to her supervisors, mentors and colleagues for their guidance and support throughout her academic journey. She paid tribute to her family, whose collective support played a vital role in her academic accomplishments. “Their encouragement and resilience have been instrumental in helping me reach this milestone,” she said.
Despite the demands of doctoral research, Akano maintained a balanced lifestyle throughout her studies, reading, listening to music and spending quality time with friends and family during her spare time.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to undertake my PhD at UKZN and for the support I have received throughout this journey,” she said. “I hope that my work will contribute meaningfully to addressing environmental challenges and inspire others to pursue research that has a positive impact on society.”
