Mr Ashton Perumaul is celebrating receiving two scholarships in the final year of his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology: the Lawrence and Constance Robinson Prestige Undergraduate Scholarship for the top undergraduate student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and the Townley Williams Scholarship for the best student entering the final year of study in a first degree.
Despite having little exposure to computers growing up, Perumaul was intrigued by programming and analytical subjects that require critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, making Computer Science a natural choice of study. Its breadth, the many opportunities it offers and its rapidly evolving nature added to its appeal.
“There is always something new to learn, and staying current requires a willingness to continually develop and adapt,” said Perumaul.
UKZN was a clear choice because of its strong reputation and the quality and rigour of its academic programmes. He appreciated the University’s emphasis on developing the practical skills, discipline and work ethic needed to succeed. Perumaul enjoyed the campus environment, student activities and events and UKZN’s talented and dedicated staff. He found it rewarding to meet and form connections with remarkable people at the University.
Receiving such prestigious scholarships was, Perumaul said, a great privilege and honour. “To me, they represent more than academic achievement; they are an affirmation that the hard work, dedication and effort I have invested throughout my university journey have been recognised. The recognition has also given me renewed motivation to continue striving for excellence and to make the most of the opportunities ahead,” he said.
The top achiever balances his demanding academic programme by playing video games and chess, reading, watching movies and television shows and spending time with family and friends.
Looking ahead to the completion of his studies, Perumaul is excited about applying the knowledge, skills and personal development he has gained at the University in a professional software development environment. He hopes to contribute to meaningful and innovative real-world projects, with a particular focus on web development. He also looks forward to gaining practical experience, sharpening his technical skills and embracing the variety, flexibility and continuous learning that software development offers.
Perumaul thanked his family, friends and academic staff at UKZN for their support, encouragement, belief in him and guidance, which have enabled him to succeed.
