Women in Science Event Inspires Future STEM Leaders

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Discipline of Chemistry in the School of Agriculture and Science, in partnership with the South African Chemical Institute (SACI) KZN Section, hosted the 2026 Women in Science event recently at Coastlands Musgrave in Durban under the theme ‘Accelerating Equity in Science’.

The event brought together female learners from 12 schools across the greater Durban area and one school from the King Cetshwayo District Municipality, as well as academics, researchers and industry professionals from sectors including cosmetics and fuel, to celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) while inspiring the next generation of women scientists.

Senior University leaders in attendance included the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science (CAES), Professor Fhatuwani Mudau; UKZN Dean of Research, Professor Neil Koorbanally; Dean of Research for CAES, Professor Rituparno Goswami; and the Dean of the School of Agriculture and Science, Professor Ademola Olaniran.

In his welcome address to the attendees, Mudau highlighted the urgent need for the current leadership to actively support diversity and inclusion for STEM development. “At UKZN, we strive to create environments where young women can see themselves not only as participants in science but as leaders, innovators and changemakers,” said Mudau. The address set the tone for the event, reaffirming UKZN’s commitment to creating opportunities for young women and fostering collaborative efforts that empower them to excel and lead in careers in science. 

A highlight of the programme was the keynote address delivered by the Africa Programme Manager for the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRF-SARAO) and Mission Director of Africa2Moon, Dr Carla (Sharpe) Mitchell, whose inspiring presentation drew from her extensive experience in the science and leadership space. Mitchell reflected on the opportunities and challenges facing women in STEM fields, highlighting the critical role of resilience, mentorship, and collaboration in overcoming barriers, achieving equity and fostering successful scientific careers. 

Encouraging learners to pursue science with confidence and curiosity, Mitchell emphasised the importance of hope and its positive impact on others. “You may not be a changer, but be an encourager. If you can give someone hope, that’s more powerful than anything else,” she said. 

Her message strongly resonated with the audience, reinforcing the idea that meaningful change often begins with empowering and supporting others to reach their full potential, setting an empowering tone for the rest of the event.

Another key feature of the event was an engaging panel discussion comprising representatives from industry, education and academia. Panellists included Ms Chervani Naidoo (Zeta Labs), Ms Ellen Rakobo (SAAB Grintek Defence), Dr Yaseera Ismail (Stellenbosch University), and Mr Wesley Ogle (New West Secondary School), with the discussion facilitated by Professor Brenda Moodley.

The panellists shared their diverse career pathways in STEM, reflecting on the challenges faced by women in science and the support systems that contributed to their success. They highlighted the importance of mentorship, resilience, and continuous learning in overcoming barriers and advancing their careers. Their experiences offered valuable insights into overcoming challenges and achieving success in STEM careers.

Learners actively participated in the panel discussion, asking insightful questions about subject choices, career opportunities, workplace challenges, and tips for professional growth. Their enthusiasm and curiosity created an engaging atmosphere, reflecting a strong interest in STEM careers and reinforcing a hope for the future generation of female scientists and leaders.

Closing the event, Olaniran emphasised the importance of collective action in advancing equity in STEM. Reflecting on the event’s discussions, he noted that the theme was “not just a theme on paper but a lived conversation shared across generations and sectors,” highlighting the collaborative effort required to create a more inclusive scientific community.

These remarks were echoed by the deans in attendance, reaffirming UKZN’s commitment to advancing inclusion and equity within the science community at UKZN.
